About a third of the way through this lockout-shortened season and on the eve of the 85th Academy Awards, I thought it would be a good time to honor some Avs. Let the games begin!
Best Lucky Break
Matt Duchene - Matt Duchene has been the Avs best player so far this season. He got a very lucky break on his goal against the Nashville Predators on February 18th as he was clearly offside as he entered the zone. But hey, when you're playing well and working hard, good things will happen!
Ryan O'Byrne - When captain Gabe Landeskog was crush and ultimately concussed by San Jose Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart, Ryan O'Byrne wasted no time challenging Stuart and standing up for his fallen captain. While O'Byrne was ultimately penalized with 19 very costly penalty minute, his fight was the right thing to do as he sent a message by standing up for his captain.
Honorable mention: Any fight by Patrick Bordeleau. Big Bordy has 3 fights thus far in his NHL career and is certainly 3-0. He is quickly establishing himself as a legitimate NHL heavyweight.
Best Hockey Name
P.A. Parenteau. I mean, as hockey names go, does it get any better than that? In addition to having a great hockey name, PAP has been everything the Avs had hoped for when they signed him as a top-line right winger to replace the departed Peter Mueller. Parenteau currently leads the Avs in goals with 7 and is second on the team in points with 13.
Erik Johnson - On Tuesday, February 19th, Matt Duchene tweeted a pic from the Denver Nuggets game. His seats were 10 rows back. Not bad. Moments later however, Gabe Landeskog tweeted a pic from his seat at the Nuggets game, courtside. Erik Johnson then tweeted, "@Matt9Duchene I hope who got you tix is the same person who got@GabeLandeskog92 tix. Because I know who they like better.#courtsidelandy"
Greg Zanon. Hands down. There is no runner-up.
And there you have it. The first annual Avies!
